Today was such a good night. Even the day was a good night. Today was Olympic Island beginning with Raising the Fawn and J Mascis. Today was Feist. Today was Bloc Party (o my goodness Gordy’s 30 years old!). Tonight was Broken Social Scene. My vocal chords are close to torn. My calves hurt so much. Tonight was SO good. I’m glad.
Aric called me this morning only having just found out that the concert was indeed this particular Saturday… and that he had a soccer photo. O no, not again, I thought – bailing on Jess for another sporting committment is not allowed, not you too Aric. But it was okay. Melly (’cause it turned out her softball game was on Sunday) met me a little before 1000 at the subway station and we took it down to Union, not knowing where we were going (I only vaguely remembered Aric mentionning Union and a streetcar). We looked lost at Union Station at a friendly TTC attendant pointed us on our way without even asking where we were going. Nice guy. =) We made it to Centre Island only having to wait for one ferry. There were a disproportionate number of Asian people because of the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, in which Annie and Lincoln (out of the race with a busted ankle) were participating. But did you know 80% of the participnants are in fact not Chinese?
We watched one of their races… UC came in second in their heat, but they’re likely to do well. We wandered a bit and Linc took off with the team to Japanese food and had strong muscular rowers (paddlers?) carry things for him LoL. Annie came with Mel and I and we went to wait for Aric and eat lunch. Ryan was there! I have a sketchy picture of him through the crowd later before the BSS performance (tehe). The three of us concert-goers (I sold Annie’s ticket to a Shawna from the internet/Davisville) left after we said hi to Heidi and Kevin. I have a pretty purple BSS t-shirt now. It’s almost two now so I’m going to take a break and finish this entry tomorrow when I’m awake and thinking crazy thoughts ’cause there’s no one around to listen to them and my photos will be uploaded.
<8-hour pause>
When we got to Olympic Island and t-shirt purchases (I wanted a Bloc Party t-shirt but I didn’t like the ones they had… I wanted a “God Bless Bloc Party” shirt like Harry Potter wears when he’s out of uniform), Raising the Fawn were just finishing their set. We found ourselves some grass and sat ourselves down and ate popsicles in sunned (why won’t my legs tan?). J Mascis performed, Melinda was sleepy (the type of girl who takes a nap at Edgefest – but during a Jet performance of course). We did some wandering to keep her awake and found her friend Guy from grade 10ish. Guy is mixed Anglo-Chinese and therefore he is cute (I think I used to have an image of him that merged with Darren’s). He was born in Montreal and spent some time in England and had recently come from Hong Kong when we met him. He had an English accent and he and his white friend from Hong Kong both spoke Chinese better than I. We said hellos and wandered a little more. We could find Ryan who we saw earlier. We also saw the Cyber kiddies but given that I don’t actually know any of them, we didn’t go to say hi. A girl from the high school hockey team was there as well as some guys from my residence.
Feist Feist Feist! Leslie Feist is so cool. I wish I could be like Leslie Feist. I dance like Leslie Feist in my room when I’m blasting the music. Her name is Feist. Enough said.
Melly ditched before Bloc Party. She was too tired. Spoilsport, but I guess it’s okay ’cause she hadn’t heard of any of the bands. At least she was able to come. We moved a little closer to the stage for Bloc Party… maybe 15m from the stage? Jessica had SUCH a good time. Kele smiles so when he sings, especially for She’s Hearing Voices and This Modern Love.
It was fucking amazing. I love you Kele. Matt, I love your hair and your beat.
We made our way to maybe 5m from the stage for Broken Social Scene. Another fucking good show. Their music is great to listen to but I don’t like them as much as some of associated bands and label-mates (random and experimental and instrumental), but I am now appreciating all of their songs fully now. Amy Milan and Torquil Campbell of Stars were there. Lisa Lobsinger was there. J Mascis returned to the stage. k-os hung around in the rafters. It was a fucking good show. And there were horns!

A very good show… when it eneded, we made for the queue to take the ferry back city-side. My city’s so gorgeous. I’m not downtown nearly enough at night. I talked like a crazy person to Aric like I talk when I’m exhausted (usually reserved for 4am, but it was only a little past midnight) and he didn’t even look at me funny. A good guy… hasn’t bailed on me yet. We waited two-ferry-fulls to get onto a ferry. A man walked into a bar. The streetcars would’ve been crazy so we walked to Union Station and took the subway home from there. So tired, we completely missed King and Lawrence and York Mills. And then we went home.
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me,
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me,
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me,
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me,
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me…

Bloc Party sound to have gotten better from when i saw them, but sounds amazing…
Comment by Nick 25 June 2006 @ 614 PMespecially jealous of feist though.
sounds like you had a lot of fun
It was a lot of fun. The show itself might not have been as enjoyable as the Stills concert a month ago, but for that I was less than a metre away from Tim Fletcher. The closest I ever got last night was those 5-6m away. I think Bloc Party might've been more impressive had they been the headliners and performing at night… or had I been right up close to them. I liked how Matt wasn't placed too far behind everyone else the way drummers usually are. I really liked Waiting for the 7.18 actually, it was their first performance… and it was fun knowing the lyrics to songs not yet performed… really tells you how much time I spend online.
But the BSS set was fantastic the way they kept bringing out associate members/performers again and again for the tracks on which they participate. It's a shame k-os didn't perform with them.
Comment by jess 25 June 2006 @ 923 PMthats sounds like a damn good show. i saw feist’s set for it, great choices
Comment by john 26 June 2006 @ 656 PM=D i think so. I’m hoping someone recorded the entire show and then uploads it somewhere, so I can download some more entire live sets. *hint* =P
Comment by jess 26 June 2006 @ 705 PMJust saw BSS close Virgin Festival tonight so readying your reactions to their earlier show was cool. Tonight’s show (Sep 10) was great – the whole crew was there, Feist, Emily Haines, Amy Millan…. they rocked my world!
Comment by Jason 11 September 2006 @ 210 AMO man I wish I was at V-fest. BSS with all Emily Haines too! and Muse! Makes me sad to be in Montreal sometimes (and Metric played the U of T frosh as well). I’m glad you enjoyed the concert?
btw, how did you come across my blog?
