Since there’s no snow on the ground, I don’t really have the drive to pull out my La Canadiennes yet. I wore my “big ugly parka” (one of those long Triple Five Soul down-filled coats that were selling well in 2005) to school today and it was a bit too much, but until my tweed coat arrives (the ‘rents are in Hong Kong and are posting it from there), it’s all I have as my Soia&Kyo is too thin. Amanda/Beyonce who sits beside me in class began to wear her fake Uggs yesterday and while I usually turn my nose up to Uggs, they seem rather appropriate for this sort of dry, sub-zero weather. I saw these shearling-lined suede boots online and I felt reassured that there was something better available, not that I’ll be buying them from Harbin or anything.

On another note, I was reading about Emma and Ronni’s Oxford Srafcon and their visit to an exhibition on steampunk and it reminded me of something James said to me at a party once when he noticed that because I could not drink, I lacked a party prop. He suggested opera glasses. The last time I wanted them was when I was watching Turandot from the nosebleeds at the Bird’s Nest. This put me on an Esty quest and while I could not really find the vntage sort I was looking for, these old school fold-up binoculars caught my eye.

Kinda cool, no? Or I think so anyway.
Most of the things I’ve been thinking about lately are to do with current events, so I won’t add my own commentary (maybe that’s what Facebook is for).
Rather, I’ll return to consumerism:

Absolutely ridiculous.
I haven’t worn a watch in years. I usually use my cell phone to check the time.
I visited Holt’s yesterday on my way home. As I was strolling through accessories (some girl was trying to buy a bag that would fit her dog in it), I saw a watch I really liked by John Isaac. It looked like this but the strap was bright purple and it didn’t have any diamonds. It was behind glass and I didn’t ask for the price. Why do do this to myself?

I handed in all my finals on Tuesday. I’m pretty sure I aced anthro because I’ve gotten As on both exams and the presentation. I hope I do well on my thesis since it’s absorbed so much of my life these past two months. I’m not so sure about art history, because I did that thing where I have not enough time and end up not really following instructions. But it’s over. And so I’m glad.

Today was a pub night and I think there was supposed to be socialising between students of different area studies disciplines, but instead I spent most more than two hours chatting about China plans with Ben, Sarah, and Xue-Rong (we’re in council together). I’m so excited; there will be so many friends and semi-friends there next year, and even just really nice acquaintances who would be such friendly faces to see while abroad. I should probably start some of those applications. I think I want to go to Harbin for the fall semester, and then Xi’an in the spring semester. Hopefully, everyone will be in Beijing.
Also, I swore I’d stop doing this, but clearly I can’t help it. (more…)
