I DON’T WANT TO BE // A PROLOGUE TO HISTORY

Moules+frites

Went to Bières et compagnie for all you can eat moules+frites with Gina, Kat and Patrick, and Andres tonight and it was okay but kind of pricy but an overall fun outing I think?  This was probably a meal I should’ve had in Belgium with Tiffy but it didn’t really happen as moules+frites.  They were eaten on separate occasions, and the fries were far superior.  I didn’t actually order fries, but the mussels were pretty good although not everyone was totally satisfied.  I think overeating doesn’t help.

Earlier there was another 2 on 1 fight with Patrick and I feel bad because I think we hurt his feelings, but at the same time I really disagree (and disapprove) of his attitude toward certain issues.  I only feel bad ’cause it’s 2 on 1 though because I think it’s important to stand up for what you believe in, which I don’t feel I ever used to do (maybe it depends on groups of friends and what’s comfortable/custom).  Anyhoo, it’s hella warm out again, the second 28° C day of the year (which is weird this time of year), but it’s raining again tomorrow so hopefully it cools down.  I wore shorts; hopefully my pasty white legs got some colour.  I finished another cover letter this afternoon in the Bronfman with Kat and Patrick, so I will send it off tomorrow.  I’ll try to finish the next three tomorrow now that I have some momentum.

Will mayhaps climb into bed now to listen to BBC World Service and Radio Netherlands Worldwide.  Good night.

Sibling relations

Even though my brother wants to enlist and rebels against the family by voting Conservative, he’s way easier to deal with than my sister.  She can be so high maintenance.  That said, her visit this weekend went okay.  She arrived Saturday afternoon and we checked out a few boutiques on St-Laurent before heading to La Paryse for burgers with my roommates.  Then we went for sheesha (smoking’s hard on the lungs eh?) on St-Denis and went to look for chocolate but the line went well outside Juliette & Chocolat so we went to Else’s instead where we had (no beer, strangely) hot chocolate and Johnny Cheesecake.  Sunday I took her to La Croissanterie Figaro and Caffè in Gamba (which I first went to with Ally and Laurence and co.) and we wandered up and down Laurier looking at clothes I can’t afford (though La Canadienne will have a sale in March, I like these). We headed down Parc for a while, then St-Laurent to get her shish taouk (chicken shawarma in Montreal), and I left her for a while to have coffee with her friend who studies sanitation. For dinner, we had Schwartz’s – it was my first time dining in. Later, we watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona (I found the narrator irritating at times), and then yea… I think I enjoyed most of the visit? But I got really grumpy with her presence by Monday morning, and I was seriously annoyed by the way she described people (like entire nationalities in grand sweeping statements, kinda racist even when it isn’t negative/discriminatory) by Sunday. She left Monday morning, fortunately, and I think it was a nice day-and-a-half visit, I suppose.

Speaking of racism, I finally finished the first draft of my response essay for the application I mentioned last time. Now to complete my self-critical personal statement… fun.

yum soup:

  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • a jar full of grilled red peppers (drain ‘em)
  • one onion or a few shallots
  • carrot, or you know, whatever, not neccessary
  • a dash of tomato paste
  • enough broth to cover, and then some more
  • more/less a half cup of cream
  • salt and pepper or whatever

chop up all the veggies into little pieces, put them in a pot with enough broth to cover, and then some more.  season, and cook on low-medium heat until mushy.  if you have one, use a hand blender to purée it.  i don’t have one, so i just wait ’til the veggies are as disintegrated as my patience will allow and then i go through it with a whisk.  to thin it out, i just stir in some milk or broth, and then add cream.  it’s sooooooooooooooooo good.  i think i had some version of this soup at the holt’s cafe on bloor in toronto but it had white wine and some more impressive stock/broth and no carrots or onions, but whatever, i’m both a student and ill.  easy easy soup, but i’m glad i prepared the veggies beforehand.  i’m a tad sick right now and now matter how good and probably nutritious and healing this soup is, i would not be in the mood to chop veggies (esp. not that onion) the way i’m feeling today.

i would’ve made congee but these ingredients were already ready (yay).  although congee is something i would be prepared to prepare in this state because it’s ridiculously easy:

  • rice (clean it!)
  • water, lots of it

cook on low heat all day or until desired level of mush is achieved.  salt to taste.  the end.

So… it turns out I’m far too uncreative to plan out my own meals.

  • I need recpies. Simple recipes. Or they don’t have to be incredibly simple ’cause I’m pretty okay and following instructions, but simple/accessible ingredients for dishes that don’t need to be prepared a day in advance.
  • I need flavour. Though I’m far too easily satisfied by salt and pepper, I figure I should probably stock up on herbs and pantry-kept seasoning things.

So if you can help me with any ideas for either of those, that would be fantastic and if you’re around, maybe I’ll make it for you?
