Archives for the month of: August, 2006

I had my first memorable dream in the longest time. I can’t remember the beginning, but the highlight was being cast as Lyra but being coached by Meryl Streep a la the Devil Wears Prada. She was very disappointed with my acting skills but tried to be enthusiastic nonetheless. This was in the pool at camp. It was with some of the big-kid group and Josie. It wasn’t strange that I was cast as Lyra but it was strange that I was cast as Lyra and the biggest worries were that I wasn’t blonde (apparently, not being 11-12 was not a big deal though I could’ve been 11-12-18 in the dream because I felt the campers were my peers ’cause I wouldn’t have had an acting coaching session at work, that’s unprofessional!) and and that it would interrupt my education because filming starts 4th September! I was swirling around in the water and Meryl Streep was telling me I had to be more ragamuffin about swirling around. Taryn and Genile came in with some of the little kids including the two sisters that come to camp for the full eight weeks of summer (this summer and last). Being cast as Lyra no longer became a big deal because they were all wearing the most ridiculous hair… It was that badly-dyed shade of blonde that’s kind of yellow and they were coiled. They weren’t coiled like curls and or ringlets, but very stringy and very tightly so that they looked tacky and like plastic springs. This bad hair distressed me, even more than having to interrupt my academic career to play Lyra.

I was thinking Meryl Streep but googling (or making a Google branded search of) Glenn Close.

It is the twenty-somethingth of August and that means summer is nearly over. It is not ending in terms of the calendar-year but the (North American) academic calendar that most of us still follow. We’re going back to school. I know this because of the Best Buy advertisements of course. I know this because camp is ending and camp is for elementary school-aged children (tomorrow is our last day). I know this because Val is leaving for Ottawa tomorrow. I know this because people are trying to see each other before Labour Day weekend. I know this because I just booked my train ticket back to Montreal. Read the rest of this entry »

The AIDS Conference has begun in Toronto. My sister’s been promoted from volunteer to UN intern and she’s excited ’cause she’s resume-building and she gets to meet important people.

More important than my sister’s career… I’m watching CBC coverage of the event and Federal Minister of Health Tony Clement (Conservative) is speaking. I don’t know much about Clement but he came in third/last for leadership of the new Conservative party and he’s not as right-wing as Mr. Harper. People keep shouting “Where’s Stephen Harper?” while he’s speaking. It’s a good question, but it’s really rude. It’s not Clement’s fault his boss doesn’t care.

But why isn’t our PM here? Seriously… I understand that it’s not in his agenda to care about the AIDS pandemic or that his core voter support doesn’t care about AIDS because it’s God’s way of punishing sinners, but even then, it’s SO rude to all the foreign dignitaries in attendance. Though really… I can’t understand why it shouldn’t be in his agenda.

Fucking Liberals had to mess up and now we have someone who doesn’t care.

There are more relevant things on my mind about AIDS and Canada than how our PM makes us look but I want to watch the rest of the opening ceremonies. I hope they cover a lot of the discussion because I don’t know enough about AIDS really.

I find it hilarious that we call our mayor “your worship.” I wonder if that makes David Miller uncomfortable.
